We're back with the third installment of Matt's favorite songs of the 2010s! It's beginning to become a little bit difficult start ranking these (something I didn't think would happen 'til the Top 50), so here they are, the next ten...
80. Cover Me / Depeche Mode - 2017
Like clockword, Depeche Mode puts out an album every four years. While I've never been a big fan of theirs, I can appreciate some of their tunes (People Are People, Enjoy the Silence, It's No Good, and this one). I particularly like the instrumental back-half of this track. Very transportive.
79. Shape of You / Ed Sheeran - 2017
H8ters gonna h8te, but I enjoyed this song, dumb and simple as it was. It's the only Ed Sheeran song I like.
78. Chances / Backstreet Boys - 2018
This song made my Top 10 list for last year, and you can read what I wrote about it here. I'm partial to the Backstreet Boys, and this one of their better offerings from recent years.
77. 10 Mile Stereo / Beach House - 2010
I'd almost forgotten about this one, coming from the first year of the decade, but once I rediscovered it, I was drawn-in again by its haunting vocals and spare -- though soaring -- instrumentation.
76. Mississippi / The Cactus Blossoms - 2016
Like Au Revoir Simone (number 90 on the list) I discovered The Cactus Blossoms via the Twin Peaks revival from 2017, where they played at the Bang Bang Bar (the town's fictional tavern and performance venue). It was nice to see them in concert in St. Louis this year.
75. The Hanging Tree / James Newton Howard & Jennifer Lawrence - 2014
Lawrence sings this during the third movie of the Hunger Games series, and it makes for a powerful moment in the film.
74. Dance Yrself Clean / LCD Soundsystem - 2010
While this song is from the early part of the decade, the first time I heard it was just 2 - 3 years ago, while I was playing pinball one night at Quality Bar in downtown Champaign. There weren't a lot of folks there that night, and when the song came they turned up the volume and jammed to it. It's a good track for that. I like it.
73. Thieves / She & Him - 2010
Another nice one from the early part of the decade. I love its dreamy quality.
72. Hard Times / Paramore - 2017
This song almost made my Top 10 of the year it came out but, if we're being honest, I enjoy the bulk of it ok, but really like the last 30 seconds or so the most.
71. Tutti Frutti / New Order - 2015
One of my favorite bands, New Order's 10th (and most recent) studio album, Music Complete, is really solid, and this song took the #1 spot on my favorite songs list for 2015. That being said, another track from the same album has usurped it during the intervening years. We'll hear from that one later on in the countdown.
Hope you're enjoying this review of music from the 2010s! More to come.
