The Best Movies of the 2010s

Regular readers of this blog, along with people who know me in real life, know that I love movies. It should therefore come as no surprise that, as the second decade of the 21st century comes to a close, I'm taking a page from roger.ebert.com and making a list of my Top 25 films of the decade

Granted, there's still two months left in the year, and that is when Oscar beat season typically grinds into full swing, but it would probably do a disservice to the previous 118 months by holding out on making the list, in case some unexpectedly wonderful piece of cinema should drop soon (something better than the decade has brought forward so far). So, we push ahead.

It should be noted that these are all, obviously, subjective picks. You could call them my favorites, though I am truly attempting to choose what I consider to be the best from the past ten years. With that out of the way, let's proceed.

25. Philomena (2013)
24. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
23. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)
22. Pacific Rim (2013)
21. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
20. Skyfall (2012)
19. The King's Speech (2010)
18. Black Panther (2018)
17. The Spectacular Now (2013)
16. A Ghost Story (2017)
15. Leave No Trace (2018)
14. If Beale Street Could Talk (2018)
13. The Lunchbox (2013)
12. The Farewell (2019)
11. Interstellar (2014)
10. Swiss Army Man (2016)
  9. The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019)
  8. Dunkirk (2017)
  7. Get Out (2017)
  6. Inception (2010)
  5. Columbus (2017)
  4. Cloud Atlas (2012)
  3. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
  2. Moonlight (2016)
  1. Call Me By Your Name (2017)

And, there you have it.

If your favorite movie of the 2010s wasn't in there, well, that's not too surprising because it isn't your list. The rankings are fluid, if I'm being honest, but the entries are pretty firm. As with all things, time may change my mind on some of the aforementioned films, but that's okay. There are a whole heck of a lot of movies not on this list that are excellent, so a list is just a list.

See you at the movies.

Yesterday's Restaurants

The local newspaper has a feature from one of Champaign-Urbana's most legendary restaurateur's, John Katsinas, on what his favorite area restaurants were that have now since closed (or will soon be closing).  It's a nice little read, and has made me stop and think about the restaurants that have come and gone that have left an indelible (and edible) impression on me throughout the years. Here we go....

31 Days of Horror Movies: Thir13en Ghosts

While not a scholar or even a purist, I am somewhat of a film snob. Not a big fan of remakes, specifically when the originals don't need updating. It is therefore an unusual position I find myself in, preferring a remake to an original, and by leaps and bounds. Let's take a look at today's feature...

31 Days of Horror Movies: The Woman In Black

Yesterday, we had a lady in white, and today we have.... The Woman In Black Just as Nosferatu was our oldest horror film to be reviewed this month, The Woman In Black is our most recent. Released earlier this year, the film stars Daniel Radcliffe in a more adult role than previously seen in his Harry Potter career. He plays a young lawyer whose wife died in childbirth, so he has been raising their son (mostly) on his own. With money tight, and his job on the line, the young attorney takes an assignment in a remote village, much to his dismay. The small, closed community Radcliffe's character finds himself in is apparently haunted by a woman dressed in all black. When she is seen, a child dies. She is seen quite a lot during the course of the film. The locals get edgy with the attorney, making him feel most unwelcome. And when he is doing his work, sorting through the papers of a deceased elderly woman, he discovers the secret of the woman in black. It doesn't
